Escherichia coli is a soil bacterium, and like many soil bacteria, carries out part of its life cycle in the digestive tracts of animals.
There are lots of ways for E. coli to get into the urethra, but the most common is believed to be poor (external) hygiene. As you might expect, women are more susceptible than men.
